There are several different approaches to upper lip lifting.
- The most common procedure is the megaphone lip lift, also called a subnasal lip lift, which involves removing the skin just below and to the sides of the nostrils.
- For the Italian lip lift, the surgeon removes two small pieces of skin from under the nostrils.
- The gull wing lip lift involves an incision where the skin of the vermilion and upper lip meet
To perform a megaphone lip lift, your surgeon will start by drawing a wavy ellipse shape just below your nostrils.
A lip lift is sometimes also likened to a moustache or angel wings, outlining where they plan to cut and remove the skin.
The larger the part being removed, the larger your lift will be. The whole procedure takes about an hour once the marking is complete.
Lidocaine will be injected to numb the area, so you should not feel pain during the procedure.
Your surgeon will cut along the outline, remove the megaphone and attach the remaining skin to the base of the nose, suspend your upper lip and immediately shorten the philtrum.
The ideal philtrum length is generally considered to be 10-12 mm, but your doctor may decide not to go that short.
